Malt Whisky
This is the type of whisky that is produced by the greatest number of distilleries, all countries combined. A malt whisky is distilled from a beer produced from a single variety of grain that has been malted beforehand.
In both Scotland and Ireland, malt whisky is produced from 100% malted barley. In the United States, some distillers also follow this recipe, while others, such as the Anchor distillery, produce a malt from 100% malted rye.
Malt whiskies are usually distilled in traditional pot stills. More recently, the Japanese have introduced a new type of malt, the Coffey malt. This involves simply distilling malt beer in a column still (Coffey still), generally only used for grain whiskies.
