Speyside
Located just a short distance from the island’s west coast, this town in the south of the Kintyre peninsula is celebrated for its seascapes and sunsets and was once one of the great centres of single malt production. In the 1830s, during the Industrial Revolution, the region became home to many distilleries, more than thirty at one time, taking advantage of the abundance of barley and coal which were then used as fuel. Although most of these distilleries have since disappeared, the reputation for producing complex and characterful malts remains strongly associated with the area. Today, Springbank, the last active distillery, still reflects part of this tradition, while Glen Scotia offers a lighter and fruitier style of malt.
