Founded in 1825 on the Isle of Islay, off the west coast of Scotland, by Alexander MacKay, the Port Ellen distillery enjoyed a legendary reputation. John Ramsay took over the lease in 1836, and the site remained in his family until 1920, before falling into disuse in 1930. The distillery reopened in 1967 but was mothballed again in 1983, when the stills were dismantled and removed. Renowned for the subtlety, uniqueness and rarity of their spirits, Port Ellen single malts have long been revered by connoisseurs and collectors alike. In 2024, the distillery reopened, but lost works of art, such as this whisky aged in a Gordon & MacPhail cask, bear witness to its legacy. Distilled in 1981, this whisky aged 42 years in Sherry Butt refill and was bottled at 52.50%. The Recollection #3 range traces the history of Scotland's closed distilleries through a number of meticulously selected bottlings. Kept in the cellars of Gordon & MacPhail, they reflect an era and a chapter in the great epic of Scottish Whisky.
