The result of an original double maturation, this second bottling from the Mhoba distillery reflects founder Robert Greaves’s penchant for experimentation. Named Skukuza after one of the rest camps in Kruger Park, this rum was aged for thirty-six months in an American oak cask, then finished for eleven months in a cask that had contained a brandy from the Van Ryn’s distillery, established in the Cape region in 1845. With a voluptuous and mature expression, Mhoba’s trademark phenolic character forms a subtle backdrop for the remaining palette of flavours and aromas.

Nose : Fine, complex. Extensive and deep, the aromatic palette is marked by notes of apricot, orange, vesuvius, cane sugar, toffee and cocoa powder of remarkable nobility of expression. On aeration, scents of burlap and ginger form a dreamy second olfactory stage.

Palate : Ample, silky. At once powdery (cocoa), serene (pine) and saline, the palate is also juicy (vesuvius). Citrus fruits (orange, tangerine) and quince jelly spread their tangy, liqueur-like flavors across the entire palate.

Overall : Long, balanced. Close to sugarcane, with its fibrous character, it reveals itself to be tasty and gourmand (gingerbread, rum baba). Tenderly spicy (candied ginger) and rooty (gentian), the retro olfaction pro.
