KARUIZAWA 50 years old 1965 Bourbon Cask 62,6%

Single Malt Whisky, Japan / Honshu - Nagano, 70cl, Ref: 51726

Quantities limited to 2 bottles per customer and per transaction. A very nuanced fruitiness that allies classicism and exoticism, floral notes that never cease to gain in depth and complexity, rare spices that provide bags of heat and vitality, and above all a perfectly integrated woodiness that shines through its subtlety. These are just some of the main elements that give the palette of aromas and flavours of this Karuizawa great freshness and a youthful expression. Add to this a crazy charm that evokes single malts of the past without falling into nostalgia.

Profile: a combination of sunshine and shadow, the nose evokes a field of ripe barley before taking on a more exotic character with a hint of chilli pepper. Notes of rancio sherry (cherries in brandy). Very balanced, the palate reveals notes of blood oranges and purple lilacs, and becomes even more exotic (mango, pineapple).

Tasting note

  • Appearance : bright orangey copper.
  • Nose : fresh, with rare elegance. A sensation of great fullness and profound serenity emanates from the initial nose. Whether it is in its floral, fruity or very spicy register, one word immediately comes to mind: Harmony. From sublime citrus fruits (orange, lime) to original floral essences (lily of the valley, mimosa). Saffron notes with nutmeg and exotic fruits (guava, persimmon) and increasingly heady florals (peony, lily), the aromas of this malt are intensely pleasant.
  • Palate : with exceptional distinction, the palate first reveals vanilla and delicate spices (cinnamon, green liquorice). Next, with freshness, the mid-palate brings out the particularly floral character of this bourbon-cask aged Karuizawa. Little by little, its mature and tertiary register sets in. After being allowed to breathe, notes of white truffle, Havana cigars and stewed fruits bring a lot of elegance.
  • Overall : long, silky. Floral (rose petal), spicy (cardamom) and fruity (lychee), the opening of the finish is wonderfully exuberant. With time, it gains generosity, becoming more chocolatey and praline. The retro-nasal olfaction provides glimpses of notes of noble wood and faithfully recreates the same noble spices (cardamom, saffron). The empty glass is particularly sunny and fruity (marmalade, apricot) before cocoa powder and a handful of strong spices (nutmeg, clove) spring to the surface of the aromatic palette in a wonderful climax.
The brand

The brand

The Karuizawa distillery was built in 1955 in the town of the same name, in the prefecture of Nagano surrounded by the Japanese Alps. Japanese whisky generally has a very good reputation, but Karuizawa is especially sought after and appreciated by connoisseurs; it has accumulated an impressive number of medals in competitions. Just like Macallan, it is a whisky that owes much of its character to the type of barley that is used: (‘Golden Promise’) and to ageing in sherry casks. Production stopped in 2000 and bottles are becoming increasingly rare.
