Coconut is the fruit of the coconut tree, one of the most useful trees in the world, often called the "tree of life." It provides food (in various forms), fuel, cosmetics, building materials, among many other uses. The name "coconut" is believed to come from Old Portuguese, meaning "head" or "skull," referring to the three indentations on the coconut shell that resemble facial features. The fruit consists of three layers: the first two forming the husk and the third is the edible white flesh that forms once the coconut has ripened.
