The fifth chapter of the “Chess Investigation” collection created last spring by La Maison du Whisky, The Suspects stages a Caol Ila finished in a cask that had held a Ballechin aged in a Sauternes cask. Bottled at natural strength, this extremely nuanced release reveals a peat which, like the knight moving freely across the chessboard, endlessly roams up, down and across an otherwise lofty aromatic and flavour profile that is superbly honeyed, floral, chocolatey and surprisingly fruity (raspberry, redcurrant).
