Revealing peat and smoke in all their forms with a rare intensity, this bottling proudly bears the name “moine”, which means peat in Gaelic. But limiting it to this would be to forget its fruit, stunning maturity, particularly original oily texture and fleet of spices whose nobility is rivalled only by their power. When tasting this Bunnahabhain, it is impossible not to me reminded of the old mariner who has, for 60 years, kept it on course towards the mouth of the inlet otherwise known as “Bou-na-ha-venn”.

Nose : rich, deep. Revealing a lit Havana cigar, the initial nose is also herbaceous (cut hay, flax) and animal (bacon). A handful of fruit (pineapple, apple, lemon) are then confidently set on the table of an aromatic palette that is now saturated with smoke. Allowed to breathe, the peat becomes increasingly oily (tapenade, castor oil) and clearly exotic._x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_

Palate : lively yet creamy. Initially dominated by the acridity of a smoke that has now become ashy, the attack also reveals a more oily, salty and humid peat. On the mid-palate, notes of curry and very ripe mango manage to envelop the taste buds. This tussle between fruit, spice and peat takes on medieval tones. The end of the palate turns resolutely towards the sea with iodine and seaweed aromas._x000D_

Overall : long, smooth. Soot spreads across the palate. It is the logical and superb conclusion of an incredibly complex gustatory palette. Roasted pineapple, apple jelly and notes of smoked meat linger with conviction. The retro-nasal olfaction is floral (tulip bulb), earthy (root ginger) and honeyed (lime blossom, lavender). With rare realism, the empty glass brings us to sit by the side of a chimney fire.
