This 15 year old Bruichladdich was bottled in 1981 in tribute to the marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Presented in a superb ceramic decanter featuring the two royals, it begins by revealing a translucent peat that nonetheless plays a driving role, helping bring out all of the other aromas in the aromatic palette. The same peat also melts into the floral and oriental palette of flavours, creating an unmistakable highlight of the tasting.
Profile: the complex initial nose is characterized by notes of beeswax, fruit (apple) and an elegant peat. Allowed to breathe, it becomes marine (iodine) and vanilla. The unctuous attack is at once floral (lily), spicy (ginger) and chocolatey. The mid-palate is oriental (Turkish delight). The well-balanced finish is herbaceous, exotic (mango) and luscious (verbena). Gradually it becomes increasingly ashy.
- Appearance : coppery orange.
- Nose : refined, complex. On the initial nose, beeswax and apple jelly combine with a very elegant peat. Allowed to breathe, the nose becomes marine (salt, iodine) and delicately vanilla. Next, orange zest, dried fruit (sweet chestnut, walnut) and runny honey release their enveloping aromas in a particularly ethereal and yet very deep aromatic palette.
- Palate : rich, unctuous. Perfectly matching the nose, the attack reviews and intensifies every note of the aromatic palette. Heady florals (lily, iris), strong spices (ginger, clove) and chocolate even make an appearance that does not go unnoticed. The mid-palate takes on an oriental feel (Turkish delight, rose petal). The end of the palate sees the peat crumble and melt fully into the other flavours.
- Overall : long, balanced. Notes of tobacco, exotic fruit (mango, persimmon) and aromatic plants (verbena, mint) highlight the complexity of the start of the finish. Next, smoke mixed with particles of ash are placed on the palate. The very end of the palate reveals the absolutely magnificent shades of a twilight orange. The retronasal olfaction invites us to enjoy the subtle aromas of a Havana cigar. The empty glass is peppery, earthy and rooty (gentian, ginger).

The desire to take on new challenges at this distillery is so high that it would take almost an entire chapter to describe all the different experimental bottlings of the Bruichladdich single malt, created under the aegis of Mark Reynier and Jim McEwan. In addition to the “classic” range of unpeated whiskies, they have released peated malts (the 3D and Port Charlotte range, followed by Octomore, the spirit with the highest phenolic content ever seen), triple-distilled malts and even quadruple-distilled malts, not to mention the different casks used for maturation, a process the “laddies” prefer to call A.C.E (Additional Cask Enhancement) rather than “finishing”. Bought in 2012 by the French group Rémy Cointreau, the distillery seems to be moving towards the production of more classic styles using only 100% Scottish barley. Find out more
Following its acquisition in 2000 by a group of investors, the Bruichladdich distillery underwent a meticulous renovation in 2001, which enabled the owners to keep almost all of the original 19th century equipment, including an open brewing tank and very elongated onion-shaped stills (the stills for the second distillation are six metres high). The resulting single malt is very mildly peaty, being characterised by its coastal origins, with a scent of sea air and salty flavours on the palate. Reserving all of its production for the single malt market, Bruichladdich is also the only distillery to age and bottle its whisky on the isle of Islay. It produces two heavily peated releases: Port Charlotte and Octomore.
