PERRIER JOUET

Originally cork makers, the Perrier-Jouët couple began producing champagne in 1811. Their champagne rapidly became popular in France and overseas; the couple’s son created the first Brut Champagne in 1846 and the house’s first vintages. Childless he left the company to his nephew Henri Gallice who, despite an epidemic of phylloxera, managed to increase the house’s production of champagne. In 1902 he asked the famous Art Nouveau glassmaker, Emile Gallée, to design the ‘Belle Epoque’ bottle. This mythical bottle was forgotten until one of them was found in the house’s cellar after the Second World War. It was recreated in 1964 and became the house’s symbol.
