Founded in 2009 by Pär Caldenby, the Smögen distillery is known for its cask strength releases. This heavily peated version (50 ppm) made with Optic barley is an exception to the rule and was bottled at 95 proof on the Sikes scale (a unit of measurement previously used in Great Britain and Canada), the equivalent of 54.3% ABV. The remarkably contrasting palette of flavours and aromas focuses on an omnipresent peat which in turn highlights the other elements.

Color : Or vert.

Nose : Fine, rich. On the first nose, peaty notes are nuanced with fruity (lemon), ashy, salty and vegetal (ivy, lawn) fragrances. Allowed to breathe, the aroma palette becomes more vanilla and candied (pear, Mirabelle plum), then spicy (clove, nutmeg).

Palate : Lively, precise. As on the nose, a multi-faceted peat takes charge of the attack. Delicately liquorice, rooty (ginseng) and salty, the mid-palate develops into vanilla and fruity (pear, apple) registers. The end of the palate is spicy (saffron, curry) and lemony.

Overall : Long, svelte. Pleasing flavours of aniseed and menthol refresh the taste buds. Evoking dried peat, the end of the finish reveals original notes of basil and oregano. The rich end of the finish reveals praline sweets and lavender honey.
