KARUIZAWA Vintages 1999&2000 Batch 23 60,9%
Single Malt Whisky, Japan / Honshu - Nagano, 70cl, Ref: 56532
Located northwest of Tokyo at the foot of Mount Asama, the Karuizawa distillery has become almost legendary since its closure in 2000. This single malt from the last years of production is bottled at its natural strength. The small island of Enoshima off of Kamakura is famous for its temple dedicated to the goddess of good fortune, Benzaiten. It was an important pilgrimage site during the Edo period, and pilgrims can be seen crossing from the mainland on a small strip of land that became dry during low tide.
Profile: rich, spicy. Candied fruit, rancio notes, tobacco.

The brand
The Karuizawa distillery was built in 1955 in the town of the same name, in the prefecture of Nagano surrounded by the Japanese Alps. Japanese whisky generally has a very good reputation, but Karuizawa is especially sought after and appreciated by connoisseurs; it has accumulated an impressive number of medals in competitions. Just like Macallan, it is a whisky that owes much of its character to the type of barley that is used: (‘Golden Promise’) and to ageing in sherry casks. Production stopped in 2000 and bottles are becoming increasingly rare.
