- Appearance : cuivre à reflets vieil or et vert.
- Nose : ample, riche. Tout d’abord la réglisse se transforme en lard fumé et la pomme cuite laisse place à des fruits exotiques (mangue, passion). Ensuite, la vanille et le caramel au beurre salé côtoient des kumquats et des fleurs capiteuses. Une magnifique fin de nez souligne un rancio supérieur (rose fanée, cerise à l’eau-de-vie).
- Palate : puissante, affirmée. Des notes laiteuses de glace à la vanille contrastent avec son caractère animal (cuir, jambon Serrano). Au milieu coulent des noix de Pécan et des pistaches. Elle évolue sur le lierre, le chocolat, les agrumes confits, les fruits juteux (melon) et les épices.
- Overall : longue, interminable et avant tout d’une fraîcheur intemporelle. Elle se développe avec grâce sur le miel et le bois précieux. Le manganèse et le goudron sont d’une minéralité à fleur de peau. Son toucher évoque la peau de pêche. La rétro olfaction est médicinale à souhait. Imperturbable, le verre vide est animal, fruité et goudronné.
- The brand
The Karuizawa distillery was built in 1955 in the town of the same name, in the prefecture of Nagano surrounded by the Japanese Alps. Japanese whisky generally has a very good reputation, but Karuizawa is especially sought after and appreciated by connoisseurs; it has accumulated an impressive number of medals in competitions. Just like Macallan, it is a whisky that owes much of its character to the type of barley that is used: (‘Golden Promise’) and to ageing in sherry casks. Production stopped in 2000 and bottles are becoming increasingly rare.
A small company founded in 2006 by David Croll and Marcin Miller, Number One Drinks specialises in the selection, export and distribution of the most exclusive Japanese whiskies. Working in partnership with Ichiro Akuto, the owner of the Chichibu distillery, Number One Drinks sells the latter’s various single malts – Chichibu and Hanyu – in Europe, along with blends and the latest casks from the closed Kawasaki and Karuizawa distilleries, which were purchased in 2011. No other company offers such a wide range of exceptional whiskies, from the youngest, produced by newly created distilleries, to the oldest, often from distilleries that have long since disappeared.
A range of exclusive single casks offered by La Maison du Whisky that were bottled in 2012. The labels for the Karuizawa Cocktail Series were specially designed by the Japanese artist Hideyuki Katsumata. Commissioned by the organisers of Whisky Live Tokyo and the Tokyo Bar Show to decorate their exclusive range of single casks in 2012, the artist drew his inspiration from Japanese bar culture, and the link that exists between single malt whisky and cocktails. Since the theme of the LMDW 2013 collection catalogue was also inspired by the world of bars, we decided to develop the series further, and Katsumata created four more characters for us.
