Acquired in 2009 by Everglades Farms, owned by the Hussey family, Hampden Estate spans 6,000 hectares, a third of which is dedicated to sugarcane cultivation. Made from a ten-day fermentation, this version of the <> H mark (Diamond H) shows an ester content between 900 and 1,000 grams per hectolitre of pure alcohol. Right from the start, it asserts the particularly mineral, empyreumatic, medicinal and oxidative profile that defines Hampden’s signature. Its aromatic and flavour palette stretches beyond the Caribbean to evoke the peaty landscapes of Scotland’s Islay.

Nose : Rich, heady. Terpenic (lava), empyreumatic (fuel, gasoline), oily, medicinal (Tiger Balm), camphorated, musky and chocolatey — this aromatic profile makes no concessions. With aeration, cane sugar and macerating fruits (persimmon, mango, combava) release their pronounced scents into the air.

    Appearance : vieil or soutenu.

Palate : Vibrant, powerful. The flavour profile is in turn impressively rich and concentrated. Ashy and almost peaty, it at times recalls a single malt from Islay — an impression reinforced by a mineral evolution reminiscent of coal. Intensely fruity (pineapple) and liqueur-like (cane sugar), the finish boldly reaffirms its Jamaican identity.

Overall : Long, velvety. Delightfully vanilla-driven (pod) and high in esters, it unfolds floral (carnation, geranium) and honeyed (geranium) nuances with remarkable harmony. In retro-olfaction, flavours of dark chocolate and cardamom tea add a refined elegance. Long after, petrol-like aromas from the empty glass linger in the atmosphere.
