The market for Japanese whisky under 60 euros reveals contrasting profiles, ranging from blends to lighter expressions shaped by column still distillation. This selection of Japanese whiskies under 60 euros focuses on references whose production quality and aromatic balance represent the standards of the category.
Nikka From the Barrel
This blended whisky is bottled at 51.4% ABV, a higher strength than average that delivers a strong aromatic intensity. It is made from a blend of malt whiskies from the Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries and grain whisky, mainly corn distilled in a Coffey still. Offering a dense and structured profile, it is the iconic whisky of the house.
Nose: Fine and complex. Floral (lilac), fruity (apricot). Notes of spice (clove) and leather.
Appearance: Old gold with golden reflections.
Palate: Powerful and firm. Spicy (pepper). Woody (oak). Evolves toward ripe fruits (peach), caramelized apple and floral notes (honeysuckle).
Finish: Long. Maritime notes. Ripe fruits (plum, peach) over a background of woody and vanilla notes.
Nikka From the Barrel “Extra Marriage”
This anniversary edition marks the 40th anniversary of the original square bottle. The technical difference lies in the “marriage” period (the resting time after blending), which is twice as long as in the classic version. It combines malts from Yoichi and Miyagikyo with grain whiskies distilled in Coffey stills, revealing remarkable finesse and a rare balance of aromas among Japanese whiskies under 60 euros.
Nose: Rich and deep. Initially revealing notes of beeswax, iris concrete, roasted pineapple and nutmeg, the aromatic palette gradually becomes enveloped in rooty aromas (ginger), malty notes and earthy tones (oily peat).
Appearance: Topaz.
Palate: Lively and sharp. Medicinal (balm), smoky and lemony (zest), the palate also echoes the honeyed character of the nose. Becoming more powdery (cocoa), cereal-driven (corn, malted barley) and jam-like (apple, mirabelle plum), it gradually introduces a drier peat filled with mineral salts.
Finish: Both energetic and silky. Medicinal and invigorating, it softens to reveal flavours of barley sugar, bitter almond and candied ginger. Remarkably deep and original, the aftertaste ventures confidently into the rich and opulent world of American rye whiskeys.
Nikka Coffey Grain
Produced mainly from corn at the Miyagikyo distillery, this whisky is distilled using Coffey stills imported from Scotland in the 1960s, a key component in the blends of the Nikka house. This whisky is characterized by a smooth style and a marked sweetness, representative of Japanese grain whiskies.
Mars Cosmo
Produced by the Mars distillery, Cosmo is a blended malt, an assemblage of different malt whiskies. Its name refers to Mount Cosmo, located near the Komagatake distillery. It stands out for its oxidative notes and a structure that balances younger distillates with more mature components.
