For its 200th anniversary, Laphroaig returns to one of its historic bottlings, the Laphroaig 15 year old, which hasn’t been released since 2009. This is a more discreet, less medicinal 15 year old with subtler notes of peat, where the Laphroaig characteristic fruitiness (red and exotic fruit) nonetheless filters through. Released by the new owners of this legendary distillery, Jim Beam-Suntory.

Profile: Peat and citrus fruit (lemon) open, before white fruit (ripe pear) and spices (pepper and cumin) follow.

Tasting note

  • Appearance : gold with gentle bronze hues.
  • Nose : the peat that is so dear to Laphroaig seems to have been somewhat tamed. The nose is characterised by citrus fruit (lemon) and exotic fruit (pineapple, banana, mango) from which red fruits emerge and take over immediately. Pepper-smoked sausage, Colonnata bacon and medicinal ointment (camphor, menthol) only put in an appearance later on, finally making way for spices (coriander, nutmeg, allspice) and liquorice stick.
  • Palate : Fresh, very refined. Liquorice stick and citrus fruit (lemon, yuzu) open the ball, before white fruit (ripe pear) and spices (pepper and cumin) continue. Remains in the kitchen with savory and rosemary on a salty background (salicornia).
  • Overall : Fairly long. Extinguished garden bonfire, sharp lemon sweets. Light peat in the background. Returns to the seafront with salty notes.

Due to its phenolic character, Laphroaig is well-known among amateurs. It’s no surprise then that the distillery owns its own peat bog, capable of guaranteeing the supply of peat for the next 4,000 years. Laphroaig will never lose its character nor, consequently, its fans and its critics – since such a peaty malt cannot be loved unanimously – even its water, drawn from the Loch Kilbride spring, is filtered through peat!
