Laphroaig is one of the few distilleries in Scotland to malt part of its own barley (15%). Dried in a peat kiln for 12 to 15 hours, then in warm air for 10 hours, it is used to create whiskies peated to between 50 and 60 ppm. Moving through empyreumatic tones and earthier sequences before ending in a grand finale of rich and oily peat, the flavour and aroma palette becomes continually more powerful throughout the tasting. Generous fruit dimensions (citrus, tropical) develop in the same rythm.

Heavily Peated

Nose : refined, distinguished. Opening on empyreumatic notes of fuel oil and sleet, salt, ash, plant roots, pepper and fresh menthol, the aroma palette allows a full expression of lemon, floral (iris, hyacinth) and mineral (charcoal) fragrances that bring great freshness and foundation.

Appearance : Jaune doré.

Palate : svelte, lively. Offering its own take on the nose, the flavour palette develops more earthy (dried peat) and medicinal tones (iodine tincture, methylene blue). A fine layer of soot and ash gradually coats the taste buds.

Overall : rich, unctuous. characterised by gentle tannins and vanilla (pod), the finish reveals a now rich and oily peat. Impressively long and bathed in intense smoke, it also brings more tropical flavours (pineapple, yellow kiwi). On the retro-nasal olfaction, flavours of dark chocolate and liquorice bring smooth consistency.
