Located in La Ménitré, in the Maine-et-Loire region, La Fabrique de Bières d’Anjou—also known as La Piautre (named after the rudder used on traditional Loire sailing boats)—was founded in 2004 by Vincent Lelièvre and Yann Leroux.
In 2012, in partnership with local farmers, they began developing a malting facility—a project that came to life in 2013. That same year, with the help of traveling distiller Gilles Boudier, they produced their first whiskies.
Crafted from the spring barley varieties Sebastian and Overture, grown organically and harvested in 2021, this expression—named Séson (meaning “season” in the local dialect)—was matured exclusively in new and toasted French oak casks.
Lively and mineral, its aromatic and flavour profile explores malty, fruity, honeyed, herbal, and medicinal notes with remarkable freshness.

Closer to the producer

Transitioning from beer to whisky was a natural progression for the founders of La Piautre in 2013. Since then, in La Ménitré, Maine-et-Loire, La Piautre has brought together malting, smoking, brewing, and distillation under one roof. With two Charentais stills heated by open flames, the distillery prides itself on overseeing all stages of
production of its whiskies. Working with locally sourced organic barley malted in the traditional manner is also a priority. Moreover, in the cellars, French oak barrels are used to age its Loire whiskies with distinctive cereal characteristics.
