After distilling its first whiskies with traveling distiller Gilles Boudier, La Piautre Distillery acquired its own equipment in 2017: a 2,500-liter Charentais still. A second 1,500-liter still followed in 2020. Made from the Sebastian and Overture spring barley varieties, organically grown, this expression was finished for six months in Chenin wine casks—a grape variety emblematic of the Loire Valley. The whisky was matured in a troglodytic tuffeau cave in Montsoreau, where extreme humidity shaped its character. Radiant with maturity and elegance, its deeply malty aromatic and flavour profile is lifted by honeyed and fruity notes, evoking with precision the world of the Loire’s finest white wines.

Closer to the producer

Transitioning from beer to whisky was a natural progression for the founders of La Piautre in 2013. Since then, in La Ménitré, Maine-et-Loire, La Piautre has brought together malting, smoking, brewing, and distillation under one roof. With two Charentais stills heated by open flames, the distillery prides itself on overseeing all stages of
production of its whiskies. Working with locally sourced organic barley malted in the traditional manner is also a priority. Moreover, in the cellars, French oak barrels are used to age its Loire whiskies with distinctive cereal characteristics.
