- Appearance : ambre soutenu à reflets verdâtres.
- Nose : puissant, concentré. Il faut prendre son temps pour l’appréhender pleinement et gravir, sans se presser, sa pente. Après un champ d’orge, c’est un verger abondant que l’on croise au détour d’un sentier. Abricot, coing, pomme cuite et agrumes donnent leurs couleurs dorées au tableau. Plus loin, les épices (cannelle) et le cuir viennent soutenir notre ascension.
- Palate : ample, racée. Les fruits secs franchissent tout d’abord une barrière d’épices (cannelle, cumin) avant d’enrober les papilles gustatives. Le milieu de bouche est fruité, miellé, herbacé (lichen) et salin. Elle se prolonge sur des notes d’encaustique (bois précieux, cire, térébenthine).
- Overall : longue, onctueuse. Avec gourmandise, elle nous fait croquer dans un bâton de réglisse tandis que ses fruits sont devenus exotiques (mangue, kaki). Florale (pétale de rose), elle nous emmène nous enivrer du parfum paradisiaque des tilleuls sous une fin d’après-midi radieuse.
- The brand
The Karuizawa distillery was built in 1955 in the town of the same name, in the prefecture of Nagano surrounded by the Japanese Alps. Japanese whisky generally has a very good reputation, but Karuizawa is especially sought after and appreciated by connoisseurs; it has accumulated an impressive number of medals in competitions. Just like Macallan, it is a whisky that owes much of its character to the type of barley that is used: (‘Golden Promise’) and to ageing in sherry casks. Production stopped in 2000 and bottles are becoming increasingly rare.
A small company founded in 2006 by David Croll and Marcin Miller, Number One Drinks specialises in the selection, export and distribution of the most exclusive Japanese whiskies. Working in partnership with Ichiro Akuto, the owner of the Chichibu distillery, Number One Drinks sells the latter’s various single malts – Chichibu and Hanyu – in Europe, along with blends and the latest casks from the closed Kawasaki and Karuizawa distilleries, which were purchased in 2011. No other company offers such a wide range of exceptional whiskies, from the youngest, produced by newly created distilleries, to the oldest, often from distilleries that have long since disappeared.

The labels for the Karuizawa Cocktail Series were specially designed by the Japanese artist Hideyuki Katsumata. Commissioned by the organisers of Whisky Live Tokyo and the Tokyo Bar Show to decorate their exclusive range of single casks in 2012, the artist drew his inspiration from Japanese bar culture, and the link that exists between single malt whisky and cocktails. Since the theme of the LMDW 2013 collection catalogue was also inspired by the world of bars, we decided to develop the series further, and Katsumata created four more characters for us.
