    Sixth and final stop in the 15th edition of the Artist range dedicated to Islay single malts, this venerable 40-year-old expression drops anchor near Port Askaig, home to Caol Ila distillery—whose name means “Islay Strait” in Gaelic. Entirely rebuilt in 1972, save for its warehouses, the distillery reopened in 1974. Boasting an impressive stillhouse with three 20,000-litre wash stills and three 14,000-litre spirit stills, it is now the largest distillery on the island. Radiant with maturity, this expression unveils a flavour and aromatic palette of rare complexity—luminous and subtle—through which wisps of smoke drift gently in a clear blue sky.

    Nose : rich and fleshy. Camphorated, vanilla, smoky, herbaceous (cut hay, alfalfa) and fruity (pineapple, lemon), the aromatic profile shows remarkable vibrancy. With aeration, notes of peat, peppermint, sea spray, and smoked fish (herring) enrich an olfactory landscape that becomes increasingly mineral (slate) and floral (hyacinth).

    Palate : ample and elegant. Just as complex and flavoursome, the palate presents a slightly oilier peat, laden with mineral salts. Evoking a barley field swept by sea air, it reveals an outstanding balance. Various herbal infusions (verbena, chamomile) and aquatic plants (samphire) bring a welcome freshness.

    Overall : long and concentrated. Ashy, mentholated, and saline, it opens to flavours of lemon, acacia honey, and empyreumatic notes (soot, charcoal), tightly interwoven. In retro-olfaction, a thin layer of green liquorice gradually coats the palate, as scents of lime, vanilla, and eucalyptus fade into the air.
