At the end of the 1800s, three distilleries were set up in Fort William. Glenlochy, established in 1898 and closed in 1983, Nevis Distillery, established in 1878, which only remained in action for a few years, and, of course, Ben Nevis, which continues to produce whisky today. With its intense oxidative character, this version immediately embodies the unique Ben Nevis style. Refusing to do things by halves, it draws out the essence of each note in its palette of flavours and aromas. The particularly luxuriant mid-palate is a perfect example of this.

Nose : archetypal, original. With a very exotic oxidative register (pineapple, mango), the initial nose wonderfully summarizes the Ben Nevis style. Allowed to breathe, the sherry's influence paints a clear picture of a fino sherry. Notes of almond, walnut and curry even bring to mind a Jura vin juane. With lots of depth, it develops into citrus fruit (lemon, grapefruit), praline and verbena. And yet the aromatic palette still has many more secrets to reveal.

Palate : lively, spirited. The vanilla attack is also deliciously honeyed (acacia), vegetal (cucumber) and fruity (dried apricot, gooseberry). At once mentholated and lemony, the mid-palate reveals a luxuriant savage character, nuanced by shades of green that range from soft to dark. The end of the palate is nobly spicy (saffron, ginger, cardamom).

Overall : long, smooth. With the same seductiveness of the nose and the palate, the finish wavers between almond milky, candied pineapple, cut hay and spices (ginger, clover). On the retronasal olfaction, Mirabelle plum and quince flesh out its fruity character. The empty glass is medicinal (ointment), spicy (cinnamon), roasted (coffee) and oily (walnut, almond).
