Since 2009, David Roussier, Gilles Leizour's son-in-law, has taken over the reins of the Warenghem distillery. On the advice of Dr. Jim Swan, he immediately modified the stills and abandoned the systematic use of peat. In September 2020, he launched a peated variation of the Armorik single malt: the Yeun Elez cuvée, named after the peat bogs located in the heart of the Monts d'Arrée. With a phenol content of 50 ppm, this magnificent version features an earthy peat marked by powerful smoky, medicinal, mineral, herbaceous, and iodized notes. Equally pronounced, lovely fruity and floral sequences highlight the nobility of perfectly mastered sherry cask aging.

Heavily Peated

Nose : rich, full-bodied. Behind a screen of smoke, aromas of orange, apricot, and salted butter caramel are revealed. Upon aeration, the peat becomes more rooty (gentian), medicinal, and chocolatey. The aromatic palette evolves with indulgence toward notes of carrot cake and tarte Tatin.

Appearance : cuivre orangé.

Palate : Lively, racy. Crackling (twigs), ashy, and herbaceous (tobacco), the flavor palette showcases a very elegant peat that fully expresses a sap-filled apricot rancio. Deeply malty, it then becomes floral (violet, cornflower), saline, and iodized (tincture).

Overall : Long, silky. Much richer and oilier, the peat then becomes imbued with very ripe candied sugar, orange, and candied apricot. Mineral (charcoal), the retro-olfaction transports us ardently to more tropical regions (mango, persimmon). As for the empty glass, it is intensely smoky and herbaceous (pipe tobacco).
