Founded in 1898 in Kennethmont in the Highlands, Ardmore is one of Scotland’s distilleries to have maintained a distinctly peated identity. Its spirit traditionally combines smoke, mineral notes, citrus and fruit, with enough structure to withstand very long maturation. Over the decades, the peat gradually softens and becomes more integrated, while wax, ripe fruit, dried herbs and polished wood come to the fore. Selected by Decadent Drinks as Chapter Thirty Six of Whiskyland, this 41-year-old Ardmore explores a remarkably mature side of the distillery. The smoke has become more delicate and complex, allowing candied fruits, honey, wax and herbal notes to take centre stage. A rare expression of Ardmore in which four decades of maturation have transformed the spirit’s original power into something subtler and deeply mature.
