MARS The Revival 2011

Single Malt, Japan / Honshu - Nagano, 70cl, Ref: 19202

Aged in bourbon casks, Mars Komagatake The Revival is a lightly peated single malt (8 PPM) bottled at its natural cask strength of 58%. Distilled in 2011 and bottled in 2014, it is the first real whisky - according to European legislation - to be produced by the distillery since it re-opened.

Mars could have been one of the first great Japanese whiskies and Kiichiro Iwai one of its founding fathers. Yet the distillery was ahead of its time and ended up instead closing its doors twice in its first 60 years of existence. Re-opened in 2011, it has been re-born for a third time and returned to the forefront of the scene with a young single malt distilled in 2011, indirectly inherited and resulting from the expertise of a certain Masataka Taketsuru (Nikka).

Tasting note

  • Nose : Its 8 ppm of peat lie right in the heart of its aromatic palette. This is surrounded by citrus fruit (lime) and frangipane, a lively character and great stature. It evolves into white flowers (lily of the valley), with an invigorating springtime air. Malted barley reigns supreme.
  • Palate : The initial hit is spicy (black and grey pepper) with the pearly aspect of Sichuan (for those who know it). Delicate green liquorice then mixes with citrus fruits (yellow grapefruit) and melon. The grain has a strong influence. The peat is present, but not excessively, and its aromas move more towards damp hay.
  • Overall : Lemon drops, fruit (persimmon) and zan liquorice. Good vegetal (summer savoury) and spicy (star anise) length.
The brand

The brand

Located in Japan, the Mars distillery has a rather unusual, turbulent history. Its founder is none other than Kiichiro Iwai, the man who instigated the departure for Scotland of the renowned Masataka Taketsuru and more importantly the owner of a spirit company that produces shochu (Japanese eau de vie). The Shinshu Mars distillery is situated in an exceptional location that affords a truly unique whisky. Located at an altitude of 800 metres, in a region that has a particularly harsh climate, the distillery benefits from pure spring water filtered over centuries by the mountains. Another remarkable feature of this distillery is that it only produces whisky during the winter months. The fall in demand during the eighties forced the distillery to close down in 1992, but it was reopened in 2011. It was only natural then that the first whisky to be made in the new stills be called ‘The Revival 2011’.
