Reopened in 2011, the Mars distillery’s stills were manufactured according to Masataka Taketsuru drawings. A new product from Hombo Shuzo, Komagatake is a peated version aged in sherry and American white oak barrels. Proof again that quality is not always synonymous to age.

Nose : rancio. Sherry is unmistakably present. Raisins, dates and walnuts. Bags of dried fruit dripping with honey. Juicer fruit then enters the scene: prunes and Morello cherry. Develops into bitter chocolate, coffee dregs and liquorice sweets. However it remains pleasantly fresh and cheerful with a surprisingly mentholated note at the end.

Palate : mellow, lively. Evokes rum and raisin ice cream. Darker mineral notes quickly appear: undergrowth, smouldering peat and a fine medicinal note. Notes of singed wood and hot asphalt.

Overall : medicinal and floral register. Finishes on malted smoky barley.
