KARUIZAWA Vintages 1999&2000 Batch 28 61,1%
Single Malt Whisky, Japan / Honshu - Nagano, 70cl, Ref: 56537
Located northwest of Tokyo at the foot of Mount Asama, the Karuizawa distillery has become almost legendary since its closure in 2000. This single malt from the last years of production is bottled at its natural strength. This painting shows the beauty of Mt. Fuji from a far distance. Sundai Edo itself portrays Japanese farmers and travellers in the Edo period; where Mt. Fuji stays far in the distance. With the trees in dark shade of green and the ground being verdant and grassy, it's likely a depiction of Japan's luscious summer.
Profile: powerful, spicy. Candied fruit, leather, camphor, medicinal notes.
- The brand
The Karuizawa distillery was built in 1955 in the town of the same name, in the prefecture of Nagano surrounded by the Japanese Alps. Japanese whisky generally has a very good reputation, but Karuizawa is especially sought after and appreciated by connoisseurs; it has accumulated an impressive number of medals in competitions. Just like Macallan, it is a whisky that owes much of its character to the type of barley that is used: (‘Golden Promise’) and to ageing in sherry casks. Production stopped in 2000 and bottles are becoming increasingly rare.
