Ruadh Mhor, meaning “Big Red” in Gaelic, is a heavily peated malt from Glenturret, Scotland’s oldest licensed distillery. Long used in blends, it has recently emerged as a remarkable single malt in its own right.
This 15-year-old whisky, finished in an ex-Oloroso cask, opens with a captivating nose of sweet fruit and peat: coal smoke curls around caramelised walnuts, damp rubber, and bursts of red berries. The cask imparts richness and complexity with dried fruits and subtle oxidative notes. On the palate, its dense, oily texture combines peat and butterscotch, charred wood and soft caramel, while juicy raisins and jammy red fruits mingle with earthy, ashy tones. The finish is long and smoky, ending with salted caramel and lingering sweetness.
This whisky is part of the Odyssey range, an annual collection of 20 carefully selected casks, re-racked for a second maturation of at least three years. Each bottle explores the possibilities of controlled aging, charting a unique journey through the influence of the wood.
