Florio's Marsala Superiore Secco seduces with its unique flavour, both intriguing and dry, ideal for surprising pairings such as oysters. This wine embodies the heritage of the Florio family, founded in 1833 in Marsala by Vincenzo Florio, a pioneer in the production of Marsala wine run entirely by Italians. After a difficult start, due to lack of demand, the Florio winery became one of the most important in the region, alongside the famous Anglo-Sicilian houses Woodhouse and Ingham-Whitaker. Today, Florio remains a major player in the global Marsala market.
Marsala Superiore Secco is made from Grillo grapes grown on medium-textured red sandy soils on the Marsala coast and inland from Trapani. Cultivation follows local traditions, with a system of Marsala bushes and low espaliers. The Mediterranean-insular climate, characterised by strong, constant winds, influences the quality of the grapes. Harvesting takes place late in the year, with over-ripe grapes followed by traditional pressing. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in cement vats, followed by the addition of cooked must, a low percentage of alcohol and ‘sifone’, a must partially fermented with wine alcohol. After ageing for 5 years in truncated-cone vats and wooden casks of various sizes, the Marsala is ready to be enjoyed.
This Marsala Superiore Secco is a deep amber colour with aromas of bread crust, honey and vanilla. On the palate, it is distinguished by its clarity and definition, with a dry, warm and straightforward progression that finishes on a sweet and savoury note.
