"Armin" [pronounced "Armine"] was a Frankish soldier who distinguished himself at the battle of Vouillé in 507 against the Visigoths. To reward him for his bravery, Clovis offered him a county in southwestern France. This land, first called "Arminius", the land of Armin in Latin, became "Arminhac" in Gascon before taking on the definitive name "Armagnac
