MACKINLAY Shackleton The Journey 47,3%

Blended Whisky, Scotland, 70cl, Ref: 264

Second edition of the Shackleton's whisky replicate, “The Journey” is a rare and unique whisky, born from the long researches orchestrated by Richard Paterson, Master Blender at Whyte & Mackay. Bottled at an alcohol strength of 47.3% ABV, the whisky has a light honey colour, straw gold with shimmering highlights. The elegant nose reveals delicate aromas of crushed apple, pear and fresh pineapple with notes of oak shavings, smoke and hints of buttery vanilla, creamy caramel and nutmeg. The palate reveals a spirit that has plenty of impact; a tantalising array of flavours that is both harmonious and exhilarating.

Following the 2006 discovery of 3 cases of Mackinlay whisky left by Sir Ernest Shackleton in Antarctica 100 years earlier during his South Pole expedition, samples were given back to brand owner, White and Mackay distillery for experience puposes. One of the cases was removed from the ice and slowly de-frosted in a purpose-built cool room in Canterbury Museum. The team of conservators was able to examine the contents and was eventually delighted to recover 11 bottles dating back from 1896/1897, 10 of which are perfectly intact, still wrapped in protective paper and straw. Three bottles of the Mackinlay’s whisky finally began their return journey to the Highlands of Scotland and were personally collected by Whyte & Mackay company owner, Dr Vijay Mallya, onboard his private jet. Richard Paterson, spent several weeks in the laboratory nosing, tasting and deconstructing the whisky to reveal its true heritage. The re-creation of this unique bottling is composed of a large variety of highland malts including very old Glen Mhor which was the Mackinlay distillery before closing in 1983.
