- The brand
This independent bottler is without a doubt one of the most highly acclaimed in Scotland. It stands out, not for its age (though it is the oldest independent bottler in Scotland), but for its complete mastery of cask ageing. Gordon & MacPhail is the only bottler to have its own casks - carefully chosen for the purpose - filled by the distilleries themselves, instead of simply buying the ones suggested to them by the latter. This allows it to determine, in advance and with great precision, exactly how many years a whisky will need to reach ideal maturation.
Gordon & MacPhail’s directors took a somewhat novel approach in the creation of this range. With its unequivocal name, Secret Stills has an aura of mystery, but with a touch of humour, since it is followed by an upside-down question mark: a little tongue-in-cheek fun at the expense of the whisky industry, which tends to take the naming of its products extremely seriously. Faithful to their reputation, the directors at Gordon & MacPhail created a set of specifications with very precise criteria to characterize this new range: the whisky comes from an anonymous distillery, is identifiable by a code, the first number of which designates the distillery, and the second a specific release, and it must be aged entirely in a cask belonging to Gordon & MacPhail.
