Founded between 1948 and 1950 by Emile Hugot, in 1992 the distillery transferred its entire rum production to the Bois-Rouge site in Saint-André. One of the rare distilleries in the world to offer a ‘Grand Arôme’: aged rum that has undergone a prolonged fermentation. Remarkable from start to finish, this rich and powerful single cask has absorbed all of the oak notes transmitted by the cognac barrel in which it was aged for 8 years.

Tasting note

  • Appearance : burnished gold with glints of copper.
  • Nose : intense, deep. Exotic (kaffir lime) and floral, the initial nose is also characterised by notes of agave and artichoke hearts. Particularly rich, it needs to be aerated to express its exotic (pineapple, passion fruit) and spicy (mustard seeds) character. Softened by coconut milk and bourbon vanilla.
  • Palate : lively, fine. A mixture of artichoke hearts and vanilla, its attack is highly original. It then develops a gorgeous series of vegetal and aromatic (bay leaf, vervain, sage) notes. At mid-palate the décor changes to citrus fruits (orange, clementine) and exotic fruit (passion fruit, persimmon).
  • Overall : long, full-bodied. Its very fine tannins create a pulpy and firm framework throughout the tasting. Develops into acacia honey and fresh walnuts. Just like the palate, the retro-olfaction is vegetal and aromatic. The empty glass is proof that this version has gained in finesse and complexity (liquorice sticks, star anise).

Founded in 1948, the Savanna distillery continues the rum-making tradition. Deeply rooted in its land, in 1992 this ancient rum distillery, originally established in Savanna in Saint Paul de la Réunion, was transferred to the Bois-Rouge site in the north-east of the island, near to the sugar refinery of the same name. It carefully controls every step in the production of its rum, from the cutting of the cane to the bottling, which is carried out in the distillery. A rare practice for a rum distillery, Savanna produces both agricultural rums and traditional rums. It is also an expert in the production of ‘Full Flavour’ rums.
