Description
Produced in a wooden Coffey still and bottled at cask strength, this version has been finished in a cask previously containing an Islay single malt. On paper, combining the medicinal character that suits Enmore so well with the peat and smoke of a Scotch whisky was a quite simply mouth-watering prospect. The final result did not disappoint. In terms of aromas, in particular, where an oily, chocolate and exotic peat brings to mind various aspects of Laphroaig. And then in terms of flavours, where freshly cut grass and delicate smoke take up residence on the edge of the palate.
Tasting notes
Nose : lively and creamy. Milky (coconut), fruity (pear), smoky, herbaceous (juniper, gentian) and candied (apple, pineapple), the first nose now goes further than just flirting with the world of Islay malts. The citrus fruits that arrive with perfect timing (lemon, grapefruit) bring Caol Ila to mind. Allowed to breathe, the cane sugar and molasses that flood the aromatic palette bring us to Enmore’s native lands of Guaina. Gradually, a hint of rubber and tiger balm confirm this South American evolution.
Appearance : deep golden yellow.
Palate : clean, distinguished. The marvellously vanilla attack is also mentholated, fibrous (sugar cane), syrupy (cane sugar), honeyed (geranium, acacia) and floral (mimosa, broom). On the mid-palate, spices (grey pepper, clove) and aromatic plants (basil, lemon balm, dill) find perfectly harmony. The flavour palette has taken on very fresh green and golden hues. Richer, the end of the palate returns to vanilla (flan).
Overall : long, dynamic. Characterized by an invigorating salinity, the start of the finish is floral (lemongrass, cane flower, hyacinth), fruity (pear, pineapple) and creamy (coconut, whipped fromage blanc). With time, freshly cut sugar canes are stacked together before being taken to the distillery. On the retro-nasal olfaction, mature, floral and sweet flavours of cut cane fill the air. The empty glass is liquorice, mentholated and almost aniseed and chocolate-like.
