An LMDW exclusive

Profile: the lively yet refined first nose reveals superb notes of sugar cane and cane sugar. Particularly fruity (orange, prune, pear), floral (vetiver) and spicy (clove, ginger), it becomes increasingly rich and luxurious (freesia) once allowed to breathe. Medicinal (musk), it lingers on subtle aromas of orange blossom. The precise attack reveals a luxurious mouthfeel. Cane sugar and the juice of a ripe pear flood the palate. The mineral (lava) mid-palate is also floral (peony), fruity (apricot) and creamy (strawberry yoghurt). The silky finish is an invitation to savour still-warm cane sugar. A mix of spices (ylang-ylang), the end of the palate is particularly floral (carnation).

The Port-au-Prince distillery is one of the Caribbean’s last remaining distilleries and has been operating since 2018 in the Haitian capital. The project is a result of collaboration between the Barbancourt-Linge family (descendants of the famous Barbancourt rum dynasty) and La Maison & Velier. The fruit of this partnership is the rum Providence. The distillery’s first bottling is called First Drops, a white rum produced from cane syrup and fresh cane juice. The succulent Cristalline variety of sugar cane used is sourced from Michel Sajous in the north of Port-au-Prince. Distillation is completed in a steam-heated pot still.

Tasting note

  • Appearance : colourless.
  • Nose : lively and refined. The very complex first nose reveals superb notes of sugar cane and cane sugar. Particularly fruity (orange, prune, pear), floral (geranium, vetiver, rose) and spicy (star anise, clove, ginger), it becomes increasingly rich (frangipane) and luxurious (reseda, freesia, bougainvillea flower) once allowed to breathe. Medicinal (ointment, musk), it lingers on subtle aromas of orange blossom and quince.
  • Palate : clean, precise. The attack reveals a very luxurious mouthfeel. Cane sugar and the juice of a perfectly ripe William’s pear flood the palate. The very mineral (lava, ash) mid-palate is floral (peony, carnation) and fruity (apricot, mango). Next, really taking the helm, sugar cane dominates a creamy (strawberry yoghurt) and mentholated end of the palate.
  • Overall : long, silky. Carrying on from the end of the palate, the start of the finish invites us to enjoy still-warm cane sugar. A mix of spices (turmeric, ylang-ylang), the flavour palette takes on the floral character (geranium, French marigold) of the nose. On the retro-nasal olfaction, flavours of vanilla and slightly damp earth bring lots of softness to the very end of the palate. The empty glass is divinely liquorice and closely reflects the sugar cane.

The Velier company was founded by the Chaix family in 1947. From 1953 to 1983, this small traditional company, located in the port of Gênes, specialised in the importation and distribution of wines, champagnes and spirits. In 1983, then aged 25, Luca Gargano acquired shares in Velier. Under his influence the company began specialising in the importation of exceptional spirits to be supplied to the most prestigious establishments in Italy. In the early 1990s, Luca Gargano heard rumours of a mythical, quasi-legendary stock of St James Rum that had supposedly been distilled at the end of the 19th century. Eventually he discovered proof that this stock, distilled in 1885 and bottled in 1952, did indeed exist. And in 1991, following lengthy discussions, Luca finally managed to acquire the entirety of this stock, which he then released on the Italian market. These selections of rums have since multiplied and led to the birth of exceptional ranges.
