PIERRE FERRAND Sauterne Finish - 60th Anniversary LMDW 48%
Cognacs, France / Poitou-charentes, 70cl, Ref: 5948
From the most reputed limestone region of Cognac, this vintage bottled by Pierre Ferrand has been finished in a Sauternes cask. Particularly complex and mellow, its aromatic and gustatory palette – impregnated with the fruity and honeyed notes of the prestigious sweet wine – reveals a feeling of deep maturity. An impression that is heightened as it develops into a floral and spicy register, highlighting the intrinsic qualities of this extremely pure distillate.
Profile: rich, heavily influenced by Sauternes wine, the nose is honeyed and reveals notes of botrytis and exotic fruit (pineapple). The palate is syrupy and mirrors the nose remarkably closely, developing into a more tertiary (mushroom) register. The finish is spicy and floral (concentrate of iris).

- Appearance : deep burnished gold.
- Nose : rich, deep. Stamped with the characteristics of Sauternes wine, the initial nose is honeyed and waxy. Particularly expressive, it also reveals notes of dead leaves and dried fruit (dates, fig). Allowed to breathe, grapes with noble rot (botrytis cinerea) literally jump out of the glass. It becomes increasingly roasted and exotic (pineapple, pear); the Sauternes influence maintains its hold on the aromatic palette.
- Palate : firm, lively. With the same intensity, the Sauternes wine covers the palate with its deliciously syrupy flavours. At this point, the olfactory and gustatory palettes are incredibly similar. Citrus fruits (lemon, orange), sugared almonds and coffee beans nourish the mid-palate, which starts to develop into a more tertiary register; the characteristic finish confirms this with notes of undergrowth (mushrooms) and toast.
- Overall : long, fairly dry. Slightly tannic, it gradually tightens the taste buds. Elegantly woody (oak, cedar), its spicy character gradually gets the upper hand. Pepper, cloves and nutmeg provide plenty of energy on the finish. The retro-nasal olfaction is both chocolatey and floral (concentrate of iris). The empty glass is spicy and roasted (tobacco).
- The brand
The Pierre Ferrand estate is located in Angeac, in the golden triangle of Cognac, in the heart of the limestone terroir of Grande Champagne. Distillation is carried out in small pot stills (25 hl) in order to gain a maximum concentration of aromas, and the role of cellar master has been passed down from father to son through five generations. A grand terroir, small stills and ancient skills and expertise are all brought together to produce one of the best premier crus of Cognac. But the impressive skills of the house don’t end there! It also produces numerous gins and vodkas, as well as a liqueur and its own range of rums.
