The very least we can say is that this Old Pulteney takes its time to draw alongside the Nordic rivers from whence it came. Perhaps that’s due to the sherry cask maturation that brings exotic and lustrous aromas that are slightly unusual for this single malt, normally better known for its iodine and marine temperament. One thing is for sure, however, this bottling shows remarkable complexity and personality in every aspect. And as good things come to those who wait, the end of the palate and the finish return us to familiar territory.

Profile: warm and refined. The nose is fruity, with notes of dried figs and chocolate, before becoming exotic (passion fruit), floral and spicy (pepper). The palate is jammy and honeyed (acacia). Allowed to breathe, it becomes herbaceous (tobacco) and almost earthy. Notes of sea spray on the finish.

Tasting note

  • Appearance : orangey copper with glints of bronze.
  • Nose : both refined and warm. With great complexity, the initial nose gradually reveals notes of ripe apricot, chocolate, walnut and dried fig. Its elegant and sunny woodiness then creates a remarkable sensation of fullness. Left to breathe, it becomes increasingly exotic (passion fruit, persimmon), whilst at the same time heady florals (carnation, lavender) and strong spices (pepper, nutmeg) highlight its saline and iodine character.
  • Palate : firm, sharp. After a particularly lively attack on the palate, notes of toffee, apricot jam and acacia honey ensure a creamy, sweet transition. Increasingly chocolatey and roasted, it resolutely turns towards a more herbaceous (tobacco, ivy), powdery (cocoa), and almost earthy (ginger root) register.
  • Overall : long, silky. Showing great maturity and balance, the finish delivers juicy citrus fruit flavours (orange, mandarin) and sweet spices (cinnamon). Gradually, currants, strawberries and overripe red currants reveal its deliciously oxidative character. The retro-nasal olfaction wavers between the seaside (ocean spray) and notes of freshly ploughed earth. The empty glass is heady, spicy (star anise, clove) and floral (gillyflower).
The brand

The brand

Founded in 1826, Old Pulteney is among the distilleries that closed their doors for almost 30 years before re-opening in 1959, at the dawn of one of the biggest booms in the history of whisky. The most northern distillery in mainland Scotland, Pulteney enjoys a superb reputation amongst amateurs: its saline character, enhanced by hints of coconut and broom, has won over the palates of the most seasoned connoisseurs. Owned by the Inverhouse group, its bottlings are predominantly matured in bourbon casks. It has in the past, however, repeatedly marked itself out with bottlings aged entirely in sherry casks dating back to the 1960s.
