NORTH BRITISH 12 ans 2007 S.V 43%
Single Grain Whisky, Scotland / The Lowlands, 70cl, Ref: 56118A
Founded in 1885 in the Lowlands, North British is one of the oldest and most important grain distilleries in Scotland. It can produce around 70 million litres of alcohol a year and is mostly used for blends. Some casks occasionally turn up at independent bottlers. This 12-year-old version was distilled in 2007 and has a charming gourmet profile with sweet vanilla, nutty and wheat notes. The whiskies in the Single Grain Collection range are reduced to 43% then bottled from small cask batches without colouring or chill filtering. Grain whiskies are made from a range of cereals and can be recognised by their well-rounded and accessible profile.

- The brand
The North British grain distillery was founded in 1885 by three important names in the world of blended scotch at the time: Andrew Usher, William Sanderson and John M Crabbie. The aim was to join forces in order to compete against DCL, a structure created in 1877 that brought together a huge number of distilleries, whose production it controlled. The mission for North British was to supply all of the grain whisky required for the growth of various blends, such as Usher’s Whisky and Vat 69. The distillery remained independent until 1993 when it joined the Diageo group.
Although the independent bottler Signatory Vintage cannot claim to be one of the oldest in Scotland, it has managed to build up an extremely solid reputation amongst the great malt connoisseurs. The creator of the famous range The Prestonfield and many other well-known ranges, it is best known for its un-chillfiltered and cask strength bottlings that offer amateurs the chance to enjoy their whisky in its most natural form. It was also one of the first independent bottlers to acquire a distillery and now offers a growing number of expressions of one of the most artisan single malts available.
The Single Grain Collection consists of a small collection of ‘single grain’ whiskies from the main Scottish distilleries, including North British and Cameronbridge. Bottled in small batches, these are all vintage whiskies and, in keeping with Signatory Vintage’s tradition, show the exact date of their bottling on the label. Aged for slightly more than ten years, these are light, fruity, accessible spirits, enabling single malt enthusiasts to discover a family of whiskies that is still relatively little-known, but well worth exploring.
