As the tasting unfolds, this rum made exclusively from organic sugar cane firmly claims a charming rusticity that is also reflected in the shades of enticing colours that it offers up in a spirited and extremely authentic finish. It starts off chocolatey, milky, then herbaceous, fruity, roasted and even tertiary with notes of dried fruit (dates, almonds).

Profile: creamy, very slightly chocolatey, the nose develops notes of sugar cane. With aeration, it is reminiscent of an apricot yoghurt. The palate is very lively indeed, characterised by citrus fruit, exotic fruit (pineapple) and dried fruit (date). The sugar cane dominates the finish.

Product details

Tasting note

  • Appearance : colourless.
  • Nose : refined, creamy. Very slightly chocolatey and liquoricey, the initial nose quickly develops into notes of sugar cane and fermentation. Milky, it evokes strawberry or apricot yoghurt. Allowed to breathe, it increasingly resembles sugar cane, becoming fibrous, plant-based and roasted (coffee, tobacco).
  • Palate : concentrated, rich. Highly energetic, its attack reveals notes of citrus fruit (lemon, grapefruit) and exotic fruit (pineapple, banana, kaffir lime). The mid-palate reverts back to the nose’s roasted notes with an added twist of liquorice. The granular mouthfeel brings out the quality of its velvety tannins. It finally opens up onto more tertiary tones of dried fruit (dates, almonds) and cocoa.
  • Overall : long, balanced. Following in the footsteps of the palate, the finish is charmingly rustic. The sugar cane takes up almost all of the gustatory palette. Its colours range from golden yellow to grey slate via a series of green hues. The retro-nasal olfaction reproduces the milky register of the nose. The empty glass is floral (geranium) and spicy (cinnamon, ginger).
The brand

The brand

The smallest distillery on Martinique, Neisson resembles a complex kaleidoscope of green and pink houses, as if they were trying to imitate the luscious surrounding vegetation. Since 1931, three generations have succeeded one after the other at the head of the distillery, preserving the skills and expertise of the greatest Martinique tradition. Grégory Vernant-Neisson, in his early forties and currently at the head of the distillery, describes their Martinique Agricultural Rum AOC: “The most important thing to understand about Martinique rum from is that it’s produced directly from sugar cane juice, and not molasses.” Behind the Neisson philosophy lies a great respect for the value of the land and its properties. Because Martinique, with its volcanic soil and climate (particularly in the north of the island where the distillery is located) has a particularly strong influence on the aromatic palette of Neisson Rums and their unique flavours.
