Every year, Monkey 47 adds a new opus to its Distiller’s Cut special edition. This 2016 limited edition is heavily influenced by honey. Beekeeping is nothing if not a passion for Heinz Schaber, a master apiculturist and descendent of the farmstead’s founders who has managed the apiary with the meticulousness typical of the region since 1968. Once each year, Black Forest Distillers produce just 4,000 bottles of a unique, limited-edition Distiller’s Cut that never fails to set the hearts of barkeepers and gin enthusiasts racing. In a complex and extensive process, Black Forest fir honey was added to the macerate of the 47 “traditional” ingredients of Monkey 47 this year. It was then distilled again in a second extraction procedure, left to mature for three months in earthenware containers, and finally combined with soft, local spring water.

In 2008, Alexander Stein founded the Black Forest distillery with the intention of producing the best gin the world had ever seen. The latter is comprised of 47 ingredients including cassia, hibiscus, sweet flag, jasmine, bergamot, cranberry, pomelo, verbena, elderberry, spruce and more. Christened Monkey 47 in a tribute to the British Commander Montgomery, who made his own gin in the Black Forest in the 1950s, it is made in micro-vats (1,250 litres) and distilled in small steam-heated stills. Batch after batch, Alexander Stein recounts the story of his gin with incredible talent, flair and imagination, drawing inspiration from the depths of the Black Forest itself. In just a few years, Monkey 47 has become a key classic and one of the greatest, most prestigious spirits across the board. Style : Full bodied and aromatic.

The origins of Monkey 47 date back to the 1950s, during which time a British commander of the Royal Air Force, Montgomery Collins, who was posted in Germany, decided to create his own gin, which he named “Max the Monkey – Schwarzwald Dry Gin”. The name was a reference to Max – a monkey he had adopted at Berlin zoo, which was at the time in the midst of serious renovation works – and the Black Forest site at which the gin was produced. In 2008, Alexander Stein decided to recreate this gin, which had been rediscovered in the 1960s, and set up the Black Forest distillery... In tribute to Captain Montgomery Collins, his monkey Max and the 47 botanics used in its production, Alexander Stein named his gin MONKEY 47.
