MIYAGIKYO 12 YEAR OLD
Single Malt, Japan / Honshu - Miyagi, 70cl, Ref: 634
Our experts reviews“ Produced by Nikka’s second distillery, created in 1969, the Miyagikyo single malt is less peaty than its illustrious older brother from Yoichi. Rarely peaty, it achieves a wonderful expression in the versions finished in sherry casks. Within the classic range, the 12 year old offers the perfect balance between bourbon and sherry casks. Rich and concentrated, it is simultaneously fruity, spicy, chocolatey and even slightly salty. For us, it is the quintessence of the distillery, all the expressions of which have been exclusively distributed by La Maison du Whisky in France and Europe since 2001.
The most refined and least peaty of Nikka’s single malts comes from the Miyagikyo distillery in the north of Honshu island. Its whisky, also labelled Sendai for export, gains in body and complexity in this 12 year old version that is finished in sherry casks.

- Appearance : deep amber
- Nose : full-bodied and concentrated, slightly “roasted” (coffee, pecan nuts), the sign of well-managed ageing in good quality oak (sherry). It opens with light floral notes, before developing oriental spices (coriander).
- Palate : possessing rich substance, influenced by the sherry casks, with a remarkable sweetness, expressing chocolate (brownies) and coffee. A certain salinity develops, linked to the ageing in sherry casks.
- Overall : long, warm and invigorating. Solid and square-shouldered, this whisky also shows genuine finesse.
- The brand
The distillery produces a full palette of malts that enables the group’s master blender to carry out his art: sherry & sweet, woody & vanillic, fruity & estery. The aim is to produce different profiles of single malts - peated or unpeated, extremely fruity to extremely peaty - using a wide variety of yeasts. To further enhance this effect, long fermentations are carried out before distillation. The whisky is then placed in ex-sherry or ex-bourbon casks, or even into new American oak casks. Find out more
