MHOBA 4 ans 2017 Ex Bourbon Cask Habitation Velier 64,6%

Rum, Afrique Du Sud, 70cl, Ref: 58888FR

Quantity limited to 1 bottle(s) by client.

Mhoba 2017 is the result of a partnership between Luca Gargano, president of Velier and Robert Greaves, the founder of Mhoba. From the beginning of the Mhoba project, they shared a common vision. Mhoba rums are produced from the Nkomazi variety of sugar cane grown on the farm adjacent to the distillery. The sugar cane is cut by hand and pressed by an in-house developed mill. The cane juice is fermented in part by a local baking yeast as well as wild yeasts. The distillation is conducted with a pot still designed by Robert Greaves. The particularity of this still is to favor a maximum reflux in order to develop heavy and particularly aromatic rums. Mhoba 2017 aged 4 years in ex-bourbon casks at the distillery, in South Africa with a share of angels above 22%. Bottled, without reduction, at 64.6%, it has a congeners content of 571.3 gr/HLPA including 246.1 gr/HLPA of esters.

Profile: Rich and flavourful.

The brand

The brand

MHOBA Rum is a small batch, 100% pot stilled rum produced entirely from fresh sugarcane juice on a sugar farm just outside the small town of Malalane in an area called Nkomazi in Mpumlanga, South  Africa.

The name MHOBA is derived from the local SiSwati word for sugarcane (umhoba) as the rum is produced using only sugarcane juice from cane which has been planted, grown and juiced on the farm surrounding the distillery.  The sugarcane is cut by hand and the juice is extracted using a self designed and self built cane press which is unique. The cane juice is fermented in 1000 litre batches by adding a local baking yeast in addition to the wild yeast which is naturally present on the outside of the cane. Fermentation periods vary from 1 to 3 weeks according to the seasons, weather conditions and the style of rum needed to be produced. Distillation is performed using 2 identical 500 litre first distillation or stripping pot stills and the lighter flavoured rums are then re-distilled in a second distillation or spirit pot still. This three still configuration gives great flexibility in terms of producing heavy robust flavoured and funky single distillate rums as well as double or even triple distillates which are extremely smooth, refined and more subtle rums.

The owner and founder of MHOBA Rum, Robert Greaves, is a graduate mechanical engineer who has lived and worked on a sugarcane farm for the past 12 years. While holidaying on the nearby island of Mauritius in 2013 he discovered the practise of using sugarcane juice to ferment and distil rum. On returning home to his sugarcane farm in South Africa he immediately began designing and building small stills and cane presses to extract juice from sugarcane as a hobby.  After much experimentation and growing positive feedback from friends and family on his rum, he decided to obtain a license to produce rum commercially. The licenses from the the South African Liquor Board and tax authorities were finally obtained in mid 2015 and MHOBA Rum has been growing steadily ever since.

MHOBA Rum is the Spirit of Nkomazi, crafted to represent, celebrate and share with the rum drinking world, Nkomazi's cane sugar and the local people who derive their livelihood and way of life from farming it.

The Velier company was founded by the Chaix family in 1947. From 1953 to 1983, this small traditional company, located in the port of Gênes, specialised in the importation and distribution of wines, champagnes and spirits. In 1983, then aged 25, Luca Gargano acquired shares in Velier. Under his influence the company began specialising in the importation of exceptional spirits to be supplied to the most prestigious establishments in Italy. In the early 1990s, Luca Gargano heard rumours of a mythical, quasi-legendary stock of St James Rum that had supposedly been distilled at the end of the 19th century. Eventually he discovered proof that this stock, distilled in 1885 and bottled in 1952, did indeed exist. And in 1991, following lengthy discussions, Luca finally managed to acquire the entirety of this stock, which he then released on the Italian market. These selections of rums have since multiplied and led to the birth of exceptional ranges.

The line

Basically I find Mhoba very exciting. Here is probably the oldest bottling so far (with 4 years 😉). Nose: a bit of acrid alcohol at the beginning, then it comes very fruity. Green apple, fresh sweet lemon with a slight plum note. Reminds me of a white wine or even calvados. Some honey and sesame come in. Becomes more rounded and pleasant. Palate: spicy-fruity, toasted with something umami-like. Grassy, sweet sugar cane definitely comes through. Again, associations with white wine and sesame at the back come easily the esters. Quite something of its own. I like
