Re-opened in 2011, the Shinshu distillery produces a single malt called “Mars”. To celebrate its re-opening, an absolutely superb initial version, called simply “The Revival” was released in 2014. Continuing our exploration of the planet Mars, we are proud to present this single cask, distilled in 2012, with a phenol content of 3 ppm, in which a fruity, floral, spiced and vanilla sequence offers frequent encounters with peaty and smoky aromas and flavours.

Profile: powerful and very lyrical, the nose is delicately peaty and floral (vetiver). It then becomes smoky and malty. Notes of beeswax and fresh and exotic fruit. The palate is fruity with notes of vanilla, before becoming floral, saline, spicy (ginger) and honeyed.

Product details

Tasting note

  • Appearance : deep golden yellow.
  • Nose : firm, powerful. Bursting with lyricism, the initial nose is delicately peaty and floral (vetiver). On aeration, the smoke takes over from the peat. It brings with it notes of vanilla, caramel, malted barley and beeswax. Gradually, the peat and smoke give way to the fruity notes in the aromatic palette, offering lemon, pear, pineapple and mango.
  • Palate : taut, lively. It begins exactly where the nose ends, with fruit and vanilla. Rapidly gaining in creaminess, some spices also emerge (pepper, clove). The peat then appears with a saline, liquoricey character. Increasingly floral (lily of the valley, iris), the palette of flavours gradually becomes oily and earthy. The chromatic palette varies between immaculate white and intense yellows.
  • Overall : long, very mature. Assertive tannins coat the palate, while dried fruit and nuts (walnut, almond, apricot) and liquorice provide plenty of substance. The end of the palate lingers with notes of honey, noble wood and spices (ginger). Milky retronasal olfaction (chocolate éclair). The empty glass is deeply malty, with a hint of peat and smoke. And then just for a moment, a captivating scent of peonies floods the very end of the palate.
The brand

The brand

Located in Japan, the Mars distillery has a rather unusual, turbulent history. Its founder is none other than Kiichiro Iwai, the man who instigated the departure for Scotland of the renowned Masataka Taketsuru and more importantly the owner of a spirit company that produces shochu (Japanese eau de vie). The Shinshu Mars distillery is situated in an exceptional location that affords a truly unique whisky. Located at an altitude of 800 metres, in a region that has a particularly harsh climate, the distillery benefits from pure spring water filtered over centuries by the mountains. Another remarkable feature of this distillery is that it only produces whisky during the winter months. The fall in demand during the eighties forced the distillery to close down in 1992, but it was reopened in 2011. It was only natural then that the first whisky to be made in the new stills be called ‘The Revival 2011’.
