Description
From the Grande Champagne cru, this version, distilled in 1947, has an astonishing fruity complexity, but also shows an unalterable strength of character and freshness of expression. It was aged for 70 years in Limousin oak barrels in a humid cellar, before being put into dame-jeanne for 5 years and bottled in September 2022 cask strength at 57,8%.
Tasting notes
Nose : exuberant, stately. The oxidative first nose (brandied cherries, candied apricot, ripe melon) refreshingly develops polish fragrances beeswax, antique furniture). This medicinal opening (tiger balm) announces impressive presence and vivacity. Allowed to breathe, exotic fruits (mango, guava, persimmon) and citrus fruits (orange, mandarin) nuance the aroma palette with an array of orange shades. Gradually, vine flower and lime blossom fragrances float through the air.
Palate : elegant, lively. At once powdery (cocoa), fruity (mango, orange, apricot) and infused (bay leaf, sage), the attack is covered in a fine layer of salted butter caramel and a delicious quince jelly. The liquorice mid-palate hands over to new fruits (prune, white peach, greengage plum). At the end of the palette, saffron, honey (lime blossom, heather) and citrus fruit (mandarin) flavours underscore the nobility of the flavour palette’s expression.
Overall : long, distinguished. The fibrous start of the finish (liquorice stick, ginger) adds its own lots of new fruits (redcurrant, raspberry, bramble, blackcurrant). At the end of the finish, tobacco notes and spices (cinnamon, nutmeg) seep into a particularly delicate wood. The retro-nasal olfaction develops notes of dried fruit and nuts (walnut, date, almond, hazelnut). The empty glass then recreates the atmosphere of a cognac cellar filled with heady aromas (oak, clove, honeysuckle).
