A blend of whiskies from bourbon casks and bourbon casks that have already held a peated single malt, this Mackmyra small batch presents remarkable balance and quality. The aromatic palette offers tremendous vitality and freshness, with a very refined, precise treatment of the peat. Then, very smoothly, one by one, the palate reveals the secrets that, over the years, have forged the style of this single malt that manages to be both firm and wonderfully gentle at the same time. An iron fist in a velvet glove (an expression coined by Maréchal Bernadotte, the future King of Sweden, to describe the best means of ruling the French).

Profile: the fresh, firm nose first reveals a smoky, medicinal, vanilla-scented, malted peat. Notes of cough sweets and ripe fruit (white peach). The palate maintains the same smoky, peaty intensity, adding a very Mackmyra-esque resinous freshness.

Product details

Tasting note

  • Appearance : vibrant gold.
  • Nose : fresh and firm. The initial nose is dominated by smoky, medicinal peat (ricin oil) accompanied by vanilla and malted barley. This evolves with delicious sweet notes of cough-sweets, fresh ginger and ripe fruit (pear, white peach). Increasingly warm, the aromatic palette is invigorated by a lemony acidity, combined with agave milk and green liquorice.
  • Palate : lively, assertive. With the same peaty/smoky intensity as the nose, the attack is very well-balanced. Notes of artichoke heart, acacia honey, iodine tincture, and almond milk mingle to forge a palette of finely nuanced flavours that are constantly shifting. Add to this a divinely “Mackmyresque” resiny freshness and bitterness (pine, fir).
  • Overall : long, voluptuous. The peat becomes milkier, with a more plant-like character (almond, artichoke). Slightly peppery, it also reveals notes of menthol and chocolate. The embodiment of serenity, this whisky is very sure of itself. Lively and floral (lily of the valley, jasmine), the retronasal olfaction comes back to the citrus fruit (lime). The empty glass is peaty, characterised by notes of tar and rubber.
The brand

The brand

Located in the province of Gästrikland, the Mackmyra distillery first opened its doors in 1999. Unique in more than one respect, Mackmyra was the first distillery in Sweden to produce whisky. It produces single malts produced from Swedish barley and sources its water from an underground spring fed by the hills of Valboåsen. While part of its whisky stock is left to mature in 100 litre casks, the Mackmyra distillery also uses first-fill ex-bourbon barrels that, once filled, are stocked in a warehouse 50 metres underground in the “Bodäs” mine. It also uses new Swedish oak casks from a forest located on the island of Visingsö, planted over 160 years ago to provide a source of wood for the construction of military navy boats.
