The brand
This single malt is produced in limited quantities, using the finest ingredients right from the start of the production process through to its choice of the famous barley varieties Golden Promise and Optic. Its long fermentation and slow distillation result in a rich and concentrated distillate, of which only 16% is selected for maturation in casks of a rare quality, with the rest being run off as feints and foreshots. Its single malt is then aged, wholly or partially, in casks that have previously contained sherry. In fact, Macallan has even acquired various bodegas in Andalucia to guarantee this “tailored” maturation. Find out more
Merchant
This independent bottler is without a doubt one of the most highly acclaimed in Scotland. It stands out, not for its age (though it is the oldest independent bottler in Scotland), but for its complete mastery of cask ageing. Gordon & MacPhail is the only bottler to have its own casks - carefully chosen for the purpose - filled by the distilleries themselves, instead of simply buying the ones suggested to them by the latter. This allows it to determine, in advance and with great precision, exactly how many years a whisky will need to reach ideal maturation.
The line
Of all Gordon & MacPhail ranges, Speymalt is particularly interesting in that it is dedicated to whiskies from one distillery: the Macallan. The product of a long and fruitful collaboration between one of the best known Scottish distilleries in the world and one of the oldest independent bottlers, Speymalt has for many years played the role of a semi-official range. Indeed, this range presents the largest available selection of vintage bottlings, it is even more comprehensive than that offered by the distillery itself; it is even said that, in order to propose small bottlings of old vintages, the owners of the distillery have been obliged, on several occasions, to repurchase stock from Gordon & MacPhail!
