Archive SPEYMALT from MACALLAN 2007 G&M

Single Malt Whisky, Scotland / Speyside, 70cl, Ref: 51961

Un dram délicat en provenance du Speyside, vieilli en fûts de sherry de premier et de second remplissage.

It is likely that whisky has been distilled on the Macallan site, a small hill overlooking the river Spey, since the late 1700's. The first licensed distillation at Macallan took place in the earliest days of legalised production, in 1824. The distillery changed hands several times throughout the 19th century and in 1894 was bought by Elgin merchant, Roderick Kemp (who also owned Talisker on Skye). This increasing demand for Macallan has allowed the distillery to be both extended + modernised over the years. The output of Macallan trebled in the 1950's. Delicate Speyside dram, matured in First fill and refill Sherry butts.

The brand

This independent bottler is without a doubt one of the most highly acclaimed in Scotland. It stands out, not for its age (though it is the oldest independent bottler in Scotland), but for its complete mastery of cask ageing. Gordon & MacPhail is the only bottler to have its own casks - carefully chosen for the purpose - filled by the distilleries themselves, instead of simply buying the ones suggested to them by the latter. This allows it to determine, in advance and with great precision, exactly how many years a whisky will need to reach ideal maturation.

The line

Of all Gordon & MacPhail ranges, Speymalt is particularly interesting in that it is dedicated to whiskies from one distillery: the Macallan. The product of a long and fruitful collaboration between one of the best known Scottish distilleries in the world and one of the oldest independent bottlers, Speymalt has for many years played the role of a semi-official range. Indeed, this range presents the largest available selection of vintage bottlings, it is even more comprehensive than that offered by the distillery itself; it is even said that, in order to propose small bottlings of old vintages, the owners of the distillery have been obliged, on several occasions, to repurchase stock from Gordon & MacPhail!
