LINKWOOD 60 ANS 1956 1st Fill Sherry Hogshead G&M 49,4%

Single Malt Whisky, Scotland / Speyside, 70cl, Ref: 54825

Mahogany and chestnut brown in colour, Private Collection from Linkwood Distillery 1956 by Gordon & MacPhail is an intricately layered whisky. Rich, warm aromas lend to a sweet full-bodied experience with highlights of blueberry, fruitcake, and dark chocolate. This ultra-aged single malt, a testament to the knowledge and expertise curated over four generations, culminates in a resoundingly rich finish.

Filled at the Linkwood Distillery on the 3rd January 1956, Cask 20 is from a defining period in the company’s history. It was one of the last casks laid down by John Urquhart, first generation member of the family that owns Gordon & MacPhail, before he retired the following month. Cask 20 matured for six decades under the watchful eyes of John’s son, George, and subsequent generations until the decision to bottle was made by the fourth generation of the Urquhart family.

Tasting note

  • Appearance : Acajou intense.
  • Nose : Rich, warm, and sweet. It starts off very gently with soft mature alcohols being very obliging as you inhale them. Baked apple with raisins, sultanas, a drizzle of crème anglaise, and a side of toffee sauce develop into a heady fruitcake. With time, notes of a dark chocolate and orange tart come to the fore. And then, a touch of honey, a wild dark honey, that ripens into maple syrup. Further patience is rewarded with aromas of dates and figs.
  • Palate : Initially charming and gently coating the mouth. The longer you hold it however, the warmer it becomes. It is full-bodied, as expected from Linkwood, with good acidity that makes you salivate for more. It is sweet: the dark wild honey is now drizzled over warm apple strudel. Flavours of fruitcake entertain the taste buds. The mid-palate is equally gentle, but now there is more – the dark chocolate orange tart is back on the menu!
  • Overall : Oak with a touch of candle wax, followed by soot and the scent of an extinguished candle
The brand

The brand

Founded in 1821, Linkwood did not begin producing whisky until 1825. Located in Speyside, it remained in the hands of the Brown family until the end of the 1960s when it was destroyed, before being rebuilt in 1872. Following in the footsteps of many other distilleries, it fell into the hands of the Scottish Malt Distillers company in 1933 and played an active role in the development of numerous blends, including Johnnie Walker, White Horse, Haig and Bell’s. The majority of the existing single malt expressions from this distillery are produced by independent bottlers including Signatory Vintage and Gordon & MacPhail, who offer a variety of bottlings matured in sherry casks. An official bottling was introduced at the end of the 1990s: The Flora & Fauna Linkwood 12 Year Old, alongside a handful of other versions for the Rare Malts range.

Merchant

This independent bottler is without a doubt one of the most highly acclaimed in Scotland. It stands out, not for its age (though it is the oldest independent bottler in Scotland), but for its complete mastery of cask ageing. Gordon & MacPhail is the only bottler to have its own casks - carefully chosen for the purpose - filled by the distilleries themselves, instead of simply buying the ones suggested to them by the latter. This allows it to determine, in advance and with great precision, exactly how many years a whisky will need to reach ideal maturation.

The line

The partnership between La Maison du Whisky and this malt specialist goes back to the early seventies. Initially La Maison du Whisky sold Gordon & MacPhail’s great classics. In the 1990s LDMW established its own cellars and launched a new collection called simply ‘Single Cask’. Every single malt in this range undergoes a rigorous selection process from a large number of samples. As its name suggests, Single Cask consists exclusively of single malts from a single cask that has been bottled without chill filtering. It is thus a separate range in its own right, and is presented in a special bottle selected by La Maison du Whisky with a label adapted from an existing Gordon & MacPhail model.
