For 14 years, two distilleries worked together on the same site: Linkwood A, the former distillery created in 1821 (closed in 1985) and Linkwood N, the current distillery which opened in 1971. Equipped with six stills, Linkwood N produces a single malt considered by many enthusiasts to be one of the finest in Speyside. When you first taste this version bottled by Signatory Vintage, you’ll understand why, with the finesse of the cereal, the purity of its fruit, the elegance of its spice and the silkiness of its vanilla and chocolate notes creating moments of pure pleasure.

Profile: the elegant nose wavers between ripe fruit, citrus and cut hay. Allowed to breathe it develops rich, patisserie notes. The palate is spicy (star anise), exotic (pineapple) and mentholated. On the finish the spices become stronger (curry) and notes of bourbon vanilla bring lots of smoothness.

Product details

Tasting note

  • Appearance : Pale gold.
  • Nose : refined, elegant. A subtle blend of fruity (pear, apple), lemony and herbaceous (cut hay) notes, the initial nose displays incredible freshness. Allowed to breathe, it becomes increasingly focused on dessert and pastry notes. Sweet spices (cinnamon, ginger) bring huge energy to the palette of aromas, which then becomes distinctly more centred on fermentation (yeast, beer) and toasted (barley, coffee) aromas.
  • Palate : clear, lively. The spicy (pepper, star anise) and exotic (pineapple, banana) attack literally transcends the nose. The mid-palate is mentholated with a very delicate woody (oak, cedar) sensation. Gradually a fine layer of liquorice envelops the taste buds. It continues with notes of chocolate and clover.
  • Overall : intense, assertive. On the finish, the spices become stronger (curry, black pepper) and the fruity notes more candied (pear, plum). At the same time, a gentle bourbon vanilla appears on the tongue. The end of the palate is smooth and creamy. The retro-nasal olfaction wavers between spice, citrus fruit (orange) and fresh walnut. The empty glass is herbaceous and delicately woody.
The brand

The brand

Founded in 1821, Linkwood did not begin producing whisky until 1825. Located in Speyside, it remained in the hands of the Brown family until the end of the 1960s when it was destroyed, before being rebuilt in 1872. Following in the footsteps of many other distilleries, it fell into the hands of the Scottish Malt Distillers company in 1933 and played an active role in the development of numerous blends, including Johnnie Walker, White Horse, Haig and Bell’s. The majority of the existing single malt expressions from this distillery are produced by independent bottlers including Signatory Vintage and Gordon & MacPhail, who offer a variety of bottlings matured in sherry casks. An official bottling was introduced at the end of the 1990s: The Flora & Fauna Linkwood 12 Year Old, alongside a handful of other versions for the Rare Malts range.

Although the independent bottler Signatory Vintage cannot claim to be one of the oldest in Scotland, it has managed to build up an extremely solid reputation amongst the great malt connoisseurs. The creator of the famous range The Prestonfield and many other well-known ranges, it is best known for its un-chillfiltered and cask strength bottlings that offer amateurs the chance to enjoy their whisky in its most natural form. It was also one of the first independent bottlers to acquire a distillery and now offers a growing number of expressions of one of the most artisan single malts available.

The line

The Cask Strength Collection of single malt and single grain whiskies is without doubt one of the most appreciated ranges. Each release is bottled undiluted, unchillfiltered and usually consists of a single cask. To help the consumer appreciate their whisky at more than a purely aromatic and gustatory level, Signatory Vintage takes care to display on each label, with great precision, the region of production, the date of distillation and bottling, the type of cask used, its number and the number of bottles of the same nectar that were produced. This range thus offers some fascinating facts, in addition to exceptional quality!
