LEDAIG 23 ans 1998 Black Series Conquête D.Laing 64%
Single Malt Whisky, Scotland / Highlands-mull, 70cl, Ref: 60120
With astounding complexity, richness and freshness, this version unmistakably echoes the great Ledaigs of the early 1970s. With absolute freedom of tone, the palette of flavours and aromas notably reveals a deeply nuanced peat, with each facet more beautiful than the next. This is accompanied by the typical minerality and medicinal character that suits this Isle of Mull single malt so well.

- Appearance : coppery burnished gold.
- Nose : rich, unctuous. With astounding freshness, the first nose is at once peaty, malty, smoky, ashy, herbaceous, iodine (tincture), chocolatey, fruity (orange, quince) and delicately caramelized. Allowed to breathe, incense, sandalwood and lime blossom honey fragrances bring lots of class and luminosity. The stunning palette of aromas is ethereal while at the same time boasting incredible presence. Exceptional!
- Palate : lively yet generous. On the attack, a dry and iodine peat that gradually becomes oily and rich is seeped in notes of imperial mandarin, fresh walnut and dark chocolate. The mid-palate is characterized by notes of lit Havana cigars and reveals an abundance of citrus fruits (orange, kaffir lime, mandarin, kumquat). The end of the palate is saturated with intense smoke (soot, ash).
- Overall : long, distinguished. Unhesitatingly medicinal (mustard poultice, tiger balm), spicy (clove, star anise) and hot (Espelette pepper), the start of the finish wavers originally between notes of red kuri squash, rose jam and red fruits (pomegranate, raspberry). Magnificent! Next, liquorice stick, heather honey and fresh coriander feed an accomplished end to the finish. On the retro-nasal olfaction, the peat crumbles and disappears, leaving in its place aromatic plants (verbena, sage) and notes of straw and wildflower (dandelion). The empty glass is mineral, very peaty, ashy and camphoric.
